After 7.5 hours of surgery, Barney Clark woke up today in 1982 with an artificial heart. Talk about medical breathrough. And not to belittle this amazing combination of science, technology, and medicine, but Barney only made it a further 3 months with the battery operated pumper.
I don’t know what this experiment cost, but Barney was a retired dentist in Salt Lake City, so I guess the medical bills weren’t an issue.
"There is nothing more dangerous than a man who has nothing to lose".(unattributed)
However, Father Edward Flanagan knew that giving boys direction, discipline, and instruction is the best defense against this dangerous truth.
Today in 1917, Father Flanagan demonstrated just what this means by starting an oprhanage and home for wayward boys. It was called Boys Town in Omaha, Nebraska. His fervor to change the lives of young men was not just noble, but also very successful. Almost 100 years later there are 12 Boys Town locations across the country helping over 1.4 million kids each year.
